Hey everyone it’s Dr. Corey, and if I know anything, it is that we are all guilty of forming some type of habit in our lifetime that probably isn’t good for us. Smoking is one of those habits that is definitely not good for us. Although smoking rates have tremendously decreased over the past 20 years, we’ve seen an increase in smoking alternatives such as E-Cigs and Juul. These alternatives are just as harmful and should be cautioned against.

By definition, a habit is a tendency or practice that is hard to give up. I believe that smoking is just that, it’s just a habit that someone picks up and becomes comfortable with. Once we form a habit such as that, it’s hard for our brain to kick. Nicotine only stays in our body for up to 4 days. After that, it’s up to us to say, “that’s enough!” In my personal opinion, here are the top 5 safe and effective options to help battle nicotine addiction.

  1. Be active, whether that’s just going for walks or joining a gym. Surround yourself with like minds. People who want to be healthy, are a good source of motivation! Sometimes you’ll find out that some of those people are trying to reach the same goal as you.
  2. Switch up your normal routine. Do something that keeps you entertained or busy during times when you may normally want to smoke.
  3. Eat healthy snacks such a veggies typically when you’re having a craving.
  4. Talk to friends or family when you’re having a craving, they are your best support. Talking about a craving rather than just keeping it to yourself, is good for you and it keeps you responsible for any decisions you make.
  5. Acupuncture is great for helping with smoking cessation. One area of the body that is focused on, is the ear. It contains many points that we can use for urge suppression, relaxation, and a point that promotes an endorphin rush, or that feel good sensation.

If your goal is to stop smoking, we are here to help you along that journey. Don’t be afraid to reach out or even mention it, there are so many options available!
